Kure Beach

On the way to Kure beach, River started to remind us that he is almost 18 months, which means two things: 1) he doesn't sit still for three hours very well anymore and 2) those big, monster molars coming in kind of hurt!  The complaining didn't last long, though, since he finally passed out for naptime.

The last time we came to Kure Beach, we couldn't get River to stay close to the water.  He would giggle nervously at it and then run back to the safety of the sand.  Today, he didn't seem as nervous.  One of his favorite words now is "WOW!" and he said it over and over as the waves (much bigger than last time) crashed toward him.

He liked getting his feet wet and was soon "splash, splashing" as the water washed over his legs.

It was a little hard for him to stand, but even when he fell, it just meant it was time to "splash, splash" some more!  He got so comfortable and had so much fun in the waves, he didn't even want to give grandpa a break.  After walking back up to the beach blankets and toys, he would run full speed back toward the ocean!  I know at least one great-grandma who just gasped nervously after reading that.

What really kept him busy was the sand.  Give the kid a yellow shovel and let him explore for an hour.  Then, grandpa had the great idea of building sand castles in the sand where water would come up and wash them away.  River loved digging holes and watching them fill up with water.

Whoops!!

Here comes a big one! WOW!

  1. Love #17--that look on his face was discovery and joy! :) And #19 "whoops" made me laugh. Wish I could hear him say "Wow!" at the waves. And, yep, it made me a bit nervous that he is running AT the ocean now instead of away, but I know Kris can be pretty fast when he's motivated to "save" his boy. hehe
